The Splendid Encounters I: Diplomats and Diplomacy in Europe, 1500-1750 conference was held at the Institute of History, Polish Academy of Sciences on 20th - 21st September 2013. This was probably the largest meeting of diplomatic historians in recent years: some 50 people attended from more than 30 institutions across Europe, North America and Asia.
The two-day-event accommodated almost 40 papers: the conference was opened by Professor Daniel Riches whose opening lecture entitled Diplomacy and Cosmopolitanism, was a great introduction to the further proceedings and was followed by 12 thematic panels, covering, among others: financial aspects of diplomacy, news networks and their role in diplomatic activities, women and diplomacy, as well as activities and diplomatic representations of different states in early modern era.
The final session gave us an opportunity to discuss the future activities of the Premodern Diplomats Network, including the forthcoming conference in Bath in 2014.
